Artist Statement about my embroidered pieces...Fiber arts have always been of interest to me. Since childhood my primary female family members have made a wage from their textile works from quilts to garments.
The pieces in this series, titled Pixels, came from a body of work that I have been working on for a very long time. The common thread throughout this body of work is to make fiber arts more relevant in the fine arts world. It started with taking family members’ old photos and doing a sort of “free drawing” using fine embroidery thread, knowing that it needed something more I continued to create. In Pixels, I took photos of women in my everyday world. There is a bond that I feel with women that makes it easier for me to find beauty and strength when I look at them. I took these photos of women out of focus because I knew when I enlarged them they would begin to resemble paintings. I wanted to achieve this blend because both are significant media in the fine arts world. I then took certain areas and layered colors upon colors of cross-stitch with embroidery thread. The translated areas are various sized circles located on the photo with the most vibrant colors. Circles were chosen because I wanted a softer look of an organic shape than a harder geometric one. |
